MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin quarterback Tyler Van Dyke was carted off the field after suffering an injury during the opening drive against No. 4 Alabama on Saturday.

Van Dyke grabbed his right knee after getting hurt on a third-down scramble. He was taken to the sideline medical tent before being driven to the locker room on a cart, his head in his hands as he left the field.

At halftime, Wisconsin announced that Van Dyke would not return for the remainder of the game. Early in the second half, he was spotted on the sideline using crutches.

Braedyn Locke, who started three games last season when Tanner Mordecai was sidelined with an injury, stepped in to replace Van Dyke.

Van Dyke had transferred to Wisconsin following a turbulent career at Miami. Named the ACC Rookie of the Year in 2021, he struggled with injuries last season, throwing 12 interceptions. He earned Wisconsin’s starting job after beating out Locke in a preseason competition.

In his first two games this season, Van Dyke completed 60.3% of his passes for 406 yards, with one touchdown and no interceptions, leading the Badgers to victories over Western Michigan (28-14) and South Dakota (27-13).
