This Monday, October 14, marks a significant date in American history, as it commemorates the arrival of Italian explorer Christopher Columbus in the Americas in 1492. While Columbus Day has been a federal holiday since 1937, it has also sparked controversy and protests over the years due to the devastating impact of colonialism on Native American communities.
In recent years, many states and cities have opted to celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day instead, honoring the rich cultural heritage and contributions of Native American communities. In 2020, President Joe Biden officially recognized Indigenous Peoples’ Day, acknowledging the historical injustices faced by Native Americans.

Impact on Mail Services

If you’re expecting mail or packages, here’s what you need to know:
  • United States Post Office: All post offices will be closed on Monday, October 14, and regular mail deliveries and packages will be suspended.
  • Online Postal Services: While physical post offices are closed, you can still access online services, including:
  • Stamp sales
  • Box and supply sales
  • Shipping labels
  • Package pickups scheduled for after Columbus Day
  • FedEx: FedEx will keep its doors open on Columbus Day, with:
  • Modified services for FedEx Express and FedEx Ground Economy
  • Business-as-usual for all other deliveries
  • UPS: UPS will continue to offer pickup and delivery services throughout the holiday, with:
  • A one-day delay for UPS SurePost and Mail Innovations deliveries
  • All UPS store locations remaining open on Monday

Other Business Closures

In addition to mail services, other businesses will be affected:
  • Banks: Most banks, including Bank of America, Wells Fargo, and Citibank, will be closed. However, digital banking services and ATMs will remain available.
  • Retailers and Grocery Stores: While most retailers and grocery stores will stay open on Monday, it’s best to call ahead to confirm their hours before heading out.
  • UPS Store Locations: All UPS store locations will remain open on Monday.

Federal Services

As a federal holiday, Columbus Day/Indigenous Peoples’ Day will impact federal services:
  • Federal Offices: All federal offices will be closed.
  • Federal Employees: Federal employees will receive a paid holiday.

Indigenous Peoples’ Day Recognition

President Joe Biden has recognized Indigenous Peoples’ Day for the past three years, issuing a proclamation that honors Native American communities:
“On Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we honor Indigenous peoples’ strength, courage, and resilience. We celebrate the vast contributions of Indigenous communities to the world. And we recommit to respecting Tribal sovereignty and self-determination and working to usher in a new era of our Nation-to-Nation relationships.”

State and Local Observance

Currently, 21 states and Washington, D.C., recognize Columbus Day as a paid holiday. Additionally, many cities and states have opted to celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day instead.

Plan Ahead

Before heading out on Monday, be sure to:
  • Check local business hours
  • Confirm mail and package delivery schedules
  • Plan alternative banking arrangements if necessary
  • Show respect and appreciation for Native American communities and their contributions to American history and culture.
