Ted Cruz has secured a third term in the U.S. Senate, defeating Democratic challenger Colin Allred in the Texas Senate race. With 72% of early unofficial results counted, Cruz led Allred 53.6% to 44.4%.
In his victory speech at the Marriott Marquis in downtown Houston, Cruz emphasized his commitment to securing the border, boosting oil and gas production, and protecting Texas values. This win not only extends Cruz’s tenure but also strengthens his position on Capitol Hill as the top Republican on the Senate Commerce Committee.
The highly contested Senate race saw both campaigns and external groups spending hundreds of millions of dollars combined. Cruz framed the election as a proxy for the presidential campaign, highlighting his alignment with former President Donald Trump and linking Allred to Vice President Kamala Harris and President Joe Biden’s border and immigration policies.
Allred focused on criticizing Cruz’s priorities, suggesting he was more invested in podcasting than addressing Texans’ needs. Allred also vowed to restore abortion rights and attacked Cruz over his support for abortion restrictions.
