Sarah McBride, a Democrat from Delaware, made history on Tuesday night by becoming the first openly transgender person elected to Congress in U.S. history. This remarkable achievement marks a significant milestone for the LGBTQ+ community and highlights McBride’s dedication to public service.

Born and raised in Delaware, McBride won the state’s single seat in the U.S. House of Representatives with an impressive 57.7% of the vote, surpassing her opponent, Republican John Whalen III, who secured 42.3% . Her campaign raised over $3.5 million, significantly outpacing Whalen’s reported $7,000 as of mid-October.

McBride’s priorities, as shared in an interview with CBS Sunday Morning, focus on affordable child care, paid family medical leave, housing, healthcare, and reproductive freedom. As an LGBTQ person, she’s personally invested in equality, but her goals extend beyond her own community.

She graduated from American University with a degree in government and American politics. In 2020, McBride made headlines by becoming the first openly transgender politician elected to the state senate. During her tenure, she concentrated on education, families, and Medicaid.

Upon her victory, McBride expressed gratitude to her supporters on X, stating, “Delaware has sent the message loud and clear that we must be a country that protects reproductive freedom, guarantees paid leave and affordable child care for all our families, ensures housing and healthcare are available to everyone, and is a democracy big enough for all of us”.
