A mechanical issue at a disused Colorado gold mine has left one person dead and 12 others trapped, officials reported Thursday.
Overview:
Teller County Sheriff Jason Mikesell said the incident occurred at the former Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine in Cripple Creek, a family-owned tourist attraction for over 50 years. Four people were injured, and 11 have been rescued, with efforts ongoing to free those still trapped. The rescue is being delayed by an elevator malfunction.
Details:
The Teller County Sheriff’s Office confirmed on Facebook that the incident was caused by an equipment failure, not a mine collapse. Sheriff Mikesell noted the fatality occurred at a depth of 500 feet. Rescuers are in contact with those still trapped, providing them with chairs, blankets, water, and ensuring they remain in a safe environment.
Governor’s Response:
Colorado Governor Jared Polis stated that state resources have been deployed to aid in the rescue, emphasizing that the state will do everything possible to ensure a swift and safe resolution.
