BARROW COUNTY, Ga. — A high school in north central Georgia is on lockdown following a shooting incident that prompted a significant law enforcement response.
Authorities have confirmed multiple casualties at Apalachee High School in Barrow County, located about 40 miles northeast of Atlanta. The incident occurred on Wednesday morning, leading to a swift and coordinated effort by law enforcement and emergency services.
“At approximately 10:23 a.m., officers from multiple law enforcement agencies and Fire/EMS personnel were dispatched to the high school in reference to a reported active shooting,” the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. “At the time of this release, one suspect is in custody. Casualties have been reported, but details on the number or their conditions are not available at this time.”
Footage from the scene shows first responders providing aid to individuals outside the school, with dozens of police officers securing the area. The FBI has also confirmed their awareness of the situation and is actively involved.
Governor Brian Kemp addressed the situation, stating, “I have directed all available state resources to respond to the incident at Apalachee High School and urge all Georgians to join my family in praying for the safety of those in our classrooms, both in Barrow County and across the state.”
The governor added, “We will continue to work with local, state, and federal partners as we gather information and further respond to this situation.”
