Dame Maggie Smith, the legendary British actress best known for her iconic roles in Downton Abbey and the Harry Potter series, has passed away at the age of 89, her family has announced.

A towering figure in British theatre and film, Dame Maggie earned two Academy Awards during her illustrious career: one for The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie in 1970, and another for California Suite in 1979. In addition to these honors, she was nominated for four other Oscars and received eight BAFTA awards.

In a heartfelt statement, her sons Toby Stephens and Chris Larkin said: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Dame Maggie Smith. She passed away peacefully in hospital early this morning, Friday, September 27th, surrounded by family and close friends. She leaves behind two sons and five adoring grandchildren, all of whom are heartbroken by the loss of such an extraordinary mother and grandmother.”

The statement also expressed gratitude to the staff at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital for their care and compassion during Dame Maggie’s final days, asking for privacy during this difficult time.
