The shooting occurred just after 11 p.m. in the 2000 block of Magnolia Avenue. When officers arrived on the scene, they found two men and one woman lying unresponsive on the sidewalk, all of whom were pronounced dead at the scene. A fourth victim, a man, later died at UAB Hospital.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue transported eight victims to local hospitals, with four of them suffering life-threatening injuries. In total, police reported 22 gunshot victims, with injuries ranging from critical to non-life-threatening.

Authorities believe multiple shooters opened fire on a crowd of people gathered on Magnolia Avenue, either on the sidewalk or in the street. Investigators are still determining whether the gunfire came from individuals on foot or from a vehicle.

Police have stated that the shooting was not random and likely resulted from an isolated incident where several victims were caught in the crossfire. Investigators are working to identify the intended target of the attack.

“These mass shootings are more about culture than crime. As Mayor Randall Woodfin said this week, we’re seeing far too many arguments being settled with bullets,” said Birmingham Police Officer Truman Fitzgerald.

The investigation remains ongoing as police work to identify the shooters.
