Four people were killed, and 18 others injured in a mass shooting late Saturday in Birmingham, Alabama, police confirmed on Sunday. The incident took place in one of the city’s busiest entertainment districts, Five Points South, just after 11 p.m. CST.
According to Birmingham Police Officer Truman Fitzgerald, multiple suspects opened fire on a large group of people near Magnolia Avenue. Two men and a woman were pronounced dead at the scene, and a fourth male victim died later at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital. All four victims suffered multiple gunshot wounds.
Several of the 18 injured individuals sustained life-threatening injuries, Fitzgerald added. Authorities believe the shooting was not random, suggesting it resulted from an isolated incident where bystanders were caught in the crossfire.
No arrests had been made as of Sunday morning, but police vowed to thoroughly investigate the case. They are working alongside the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) and the FBI. Authorities have urged anyone with information to contact the Birmingham Police Department or anonymously report tips to Crime Stoppers, with a reward of up to $5,000 offered for valuable leads.
The Five Points South area, a vibrant nightlife destination, is home to numerous bars, restaurants, and live music venues, and the nearby University of Alabama at Birmingham draws large weekend crowds.
