As iOS 18 makes its debut, Apple has released one of the final updates for iOS 17 — version 17.7. If you’re wondering why an iOS 17 update is coming out when iOS 18 is already available, here’s the rationale: all iPhones that support iOS 17 are also compatible with iOS 18. However, not everyone is ready to jump to the latest iOS version right away. This update allows users to stay secure and resolve bugs without diving into the potential unknowns of iOS 18.

Which iPhones Can Run iOS 17.7?

iOS 17.7 is available for all iPhones from the iPhone Xs and newer. That includes the iPhone Xs Max and iPhone XR (2018), as well as all subsequent models, such as the iPhone 11, 12, 13, 14, and the latest iPhone 15 series. The iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd generation) is also supported.

How to Update

Updating your iPhone is simple:

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Go to General.
  3. Select Software Update.
  4. Choose Download and Install to get the latest version onto your device.

What’s in the iOS 17.7 Release?

Apple hasn’t introduced any new features in this update, but it’s focused on delivering crucial bug fixes and security improvements. The official release notes mention: “This update provides important security fixes and is recommended for all users.”

Essentially, it includes the same security patches found in iOS 18 without requiring you to upgrade to the newest iOS version.

What’s Next for iOS Updates?

Apple will likely continue issuing iOS 17 updates, primarily focused on security and bug fixes, for a little while longer. Expect one or two more updates to iOS 17 alongside the upcoming iOS 18 releases. The next major iOS 18 update, iOS 18.1, is expected in October, followed by iOS 18.2 in December. Smaller patches could also be rolled out as needed.

Last year, for example, Apple quickly released an update to address overheating issues in some iPhone 15 models. Fortunately, with the redesigned thermal system in the iPhone 16 hardware, such incidents should be less likely this time around.

I’ll be providing a detailed report on whether iOS 17.7 or iOS 18 are worth upgrading to later this week.
