The Philadelphia 76ers have secured star center Joel Embiid with a three-year, $193 million contract extension, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic. ESPN’s Tim Bontemps reports that Embiid will decline his $59 million player option for the 2026-27 season to sign the new extension, which includes a player option for the 2028-29 season.
“Philadelphia is home. I want to be here for the rest of my career,” Embiid shared on Instagram Friday morning. “I love this community and everything you’ve given me and my family. There is a lot more work to do. You guys deserve a championship, and I think we’re just getting started!”
76ers owner Josh Harris expressed his excitement about the deal, stating, “Joel has cemented himself as one of the greatest Sixers of all time and is on track to be one of the best players ever. We’re ecstatic that this extension keeps him in Philadelphia for years to come. Joel is a great family man, leader, and person. He is an elite two-way player with size, strength, and athleticism this league has rarely seen. He’s integral to our quest for an NBA Championship, and we’re honored that he continues to choose this organization as his NBA home.”
The 30-year-old Embiid, drafted third overall by the 76ers in 2014, has earned numerous accolades, including seven All-Star selections, two scoring titles, and three NBA All-Defensive Team honors. He made All-NBA First Team in 2023 and secured his first MVP award. Embiid was also part of the U.S. men’s Olympic basketball team that won gold in Paris last summer.
The 76ers have made the playoffs in each of the last seven seasons, including winning the Atlantic Division title in 2020-21. Despite playing only 39 games in the 2023-24 season, Embiid posted career highs, averaging 34.7 points and 5.6 assists per game, shooting 52.9% from the field, 88.3% from the free throw line, and 38.8% from beyond the arc.
