Director Matt Reeves has revealed that The Batman: Part 2 will take place during winter, marking a distinct shift from the first film’s rainy Gotham City setting. The sequel picks up following the events of HBO’s spinoff series The Penguin, which occurs just a week after the original movie. According to Reeves, The Penguin will lead into the end of the year, setting the stage for The Batman: Part 2 to begin around December.

This winter setting will provide a stark contrast to the rain-soaked atmosphere of the first film, potentially featuring snow-covered streets, which would be a significant departure from the traditional portrayal of Gotham. The only other notable winter depictions of Gotham in live-action films are in 1992’s Batman Returns and the latter part of 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises, where the city is shown under heavy snowfall.

Reeves also addressed the future of the franchise, confirming that a trilogy is still in the works. The planned trilogy will delve into the origins of various characters from Batman’s Rogues Gallery, with upcoming stories set to explore the power vacuum left by Carmine Falcone’s death. As Reeves hinted, the next film will introduce new power struggles in Gotham, with the character Oz emerging as a key player in this chaotic period.

Reeves’ vision for the series suggests that The Batman: Part 2 will continue to expand on the dark and complex world of Gotham, with a unique winter backdrop adding a fresh layer to the narrative.
