Former President Donald Trump took aim at pop star Taylor Swift on Sunday, less than a week after she publicly endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for president.
“I hate Taylor Swift!” Trump posted in all caps on Truth Social, the social media platform owned by his Trump Media & Technology Group.
Swift had endorsed Harris in an Instagram post on Tuesday, following the recent presidential debate. “I think she is a steady-handed, gifted leader, and I believe we can accomplish so much more in this country if we are led by calm and not chaos,” Swift wrote. She cheekily signed off as “childless cat lady,” a nod to comments made by Republican vice-presidential nominee JD Vance about Democratic women.
Trump had previously shared AI-generated images on social media, falsely showing Swift and her fans supporting him. Swift cited such images as one of the reasons she felt compelled to publicly endorse Harris.
In response to Trump’s outburst, the Harris campaign issued a statement filled with references to Swift’s music. “Donald Trump’s week of whining and spouting conspiracy theories has voters on both sides of the aisle ready to forget that he existed,” campaign spokesperson Sarafina Chitika said. “The American people want to be out of the woods of Trump’s chaos and division, leave behind the blank space of his broken promises, and begin again by electing Vice President Harris to ensure America’s future of opportunity is long lived.”
While the impact of celebrity endorsements on the presidential race remains uncertain, Swift’s support for Harris had a measurable effect. Within a day of her post, more than 300,000 visitors were directed to Vote.gov, a site providing state-specific voting information.
