Tyler Huntley is on the move again in 2024, as the Miami Dolphins have signed the veteran quarterback off the Baltimore Ravens’ practice squad. This comes as the Dolphins face uncertainty following Tua Tagovailoa’s latest concussion, suffered during a game against the Buffalo Bills. NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero reported the news on Monday, citing sources familiar with the situation.

The Dolphins are in need of an experienced backup to safeguard their season. With Tagovailoa still in concussion protocol and Skylar Thompson likely to start against Seattle in Week 3, Huntley brings added depth and mobility to the team’s quarterback roster. His signing ensures Miami has an alternative if Thompson struggles or suffers any setbacks.

Huntley, who earned a Pro Bowl selection in 2022 despite playing in just six games for the Ravens, steps into a familiar role—filling in for an injured starter. His time in Baltimore saw him as the backup to Lamar Jackson, stepping up during crucial moments to keep the Ravens’ playoff hopes alive. Huntley’s Pro Bowl nod was unexpected, the result of injuries to key quarterbacks like Lamar Jackson, Tua Tagovailoa, Josh Allen, and Justin Herbert. Still, Huntley proved he could handle high-pressure situations, even leading Baltimore to the postseason.

In 2024, Huntley began the season with the Cleveland Browns but was released after the team cut down to its final 53-man roster, holding onto Deshaun Watson, Jameis Winston, and rookie Dorian Thompson-Robinson. Huntley quickly returned to familiar ground with the Ravens, signing onto their practice squad before being picked up by Miami.

This move is crucial for the Dolphins, especially considering Tagovailoa’s ongoing health issues. After suffering his first concussion in 2022, which led to an overhaul of the NFL’s concussion protocol, the Dolphins narrowly made the playoffs, even with Skylar Thompson under center. Now, with Tua’s timeline for return uncertain, Huntley’s signing gives head coach Mike McDaniel a flexible option. Both Huntley and Thompson have mobile playing styles, which could allow McDaniel to adapt the playbook with ease, depending on who takes the field.

Huntley’s familiarity with stepping in during difficult situations makes him a valuable asset for the Dolphins. While it’s unclear how long Tua will be sidelined, Miami is not rushing to bring their star quarterback back. Huntley and Thompson will likely lead the team as Miami carefully evaluates Tagovailoa’s long-term health.

Though Miami faces challenges ahead, including keeping pace in the highly competitive AFC, the team’s experience in overcoming adversity provides hope. Huntley, with his blend of mobility and experience, could offer the Dolphins the support they need to stay competitive while Tua recovers.
